Scoliosis — early detection, ongoing management

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that affects children, adolescents, and adults. When identified early and monitored carefully, chiropractic care can help manage progression, reduce associated pain, and improve quality of life — without surgery.

Why early identification matters most

Scoliosis is defined as a lateral spinal curvature of 10 degrees or more. In children and adolescents, the concern is progression during growth spurts — a curve that is small and manageable at age 10 can worsen significantly by age 16 if not monitored and addressed.

Chiropractic care for scoliosis does not straighten the spine — but it can reduce the rate of progression, improve spinal mobility, reduce compensatory muscle tension, and decrease pain associated with the curvature. For adult scoliosis, the goals shift to managing discomfort and maintaining function.

Our INSiGHT scanning allows us to monitor the neurological impact of the curvature over time — providing objective data at each visit to track how the nervous system is responding to both the spinal changes and to care.

Signs to Watch For

Uneven shoulders or hips

One shoulder blade protruding more than the other, or one hip appearing higher — common early signs of spinal curvature.

Rib hump when bending forward

A visible hump on one side of the upper back when the child bends forward — the classic Adams Forward Bend Test finding.

Head not centred over the pelvis

When viewed from behind, the head appears to lean to one side relative to the centre of the pelvis.

Back pain during growth years

Back pain in children is not normal and should always be investigated — scoliosis is one of the conditions to rule out.

Early assessment is always better with scoliosis. If you have any concerns about your child's posture, don't wait.
