Why Children Benefit from Chiropractic Care

A developing nervous system deserves the same attention as a grown one

From the moment of birth, the nervous system is the control centre for everything a child does — movement, sleep, digestion, immune response, and development. The spine houses and protects the spinal cord, and even minor spinal stress can influence how that system functions.

Children aren't always able to tell you where something feels off, or connect a physical discomfort to a change in how they're sleeping, feeding, or moving. The INSiGHT neurological scan gives us an objective picture of what's happening in their nervous system — information that a conversation or physical exam alone can't always provide.

Chiropractic care for infants and children uses gentle, low-force techniques suited to their age and stage. The goal is always the same — a well-functioning nervous system that supports healthy development — but the way we get there looks very different for a newborn than for a ten-year-old.

Common Reasons Parents Bring Their Children In

After a difficult birth

Even gentle deliveries involve significant physical forces on a newborn's head, neck, and spine. Early assessment helps identify any spinal stress that may have occurred during the birth process.

Sleep and settling concerns

Parents often notice that their child's sleep or settling changes after chiropractic care. We assess spinal and nervous system function and let the objective data guide our approach.

Postural changes or asymmetry

A consistent head tilt, preference for turning one direction, uneven shoulder height, or early postural patterns are all worth assessing — particularly during growth years.

Scoliosis monitoring

Children identified with spinal curvature benefit from regular monitoring throughout growth years. We use INSiGHT scanning to track neurological impact alongside clinical assessment.

General developmental check

Many parents bring their child in as a proactive check — the same way they'd schedule a dental or vision check. There doesn't need to be a specific complaint to benefit from an assessment.

What to Expect

Your child's first visit — no surprises

1

We start with your concerns

We take a thorough health history — including birth history for infants — and give you plenty of time to share what you've noticed and what's prompting the visit. You know your child best, and that information shapes everything that follows.

2

The INSiGHT neurological scan

The same non-invasive scanning technology we use with adults — a small sensor that moves along the skin beside the spine. No discomfort, no radiation. Children typically find it interesting, and many are surprised to see their own results on the screen.

3

Assessment and results review

We review the scan results with you in plain language and explain exactly what we found — including whether we think chiropractic care is appropriate and what that would look like. We'll never recommend care that isn't clearly warranted.

4

Age-appropriate care if indicated

If care is recommended, technique and approach are chosen specifically for your child's age and presentation. For infants, adjustments use very light fingertip pressure. For older children, we adjust technique and positioning based on what feels comfortable and safe for them.

Common Questions

What parents ask before they bring their child in

Is chiropractic safe for infants?+

Yes — when performed by a practitioner trained in paediatric technique. The amount of force used for an infant is extremely gentle — no more pressure than you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato. We take a thorough health and birth history before any assessment and always explain exactly what we're doing and why.

My baby seems fine — is there still a reason to come in?+

Many parents bring their infant in proactively, especially after a long or difficult labour, a caesarean delivery, or a birth involving forceps or vacuum assistance. These situations can place physical stress on a newborn's spine that isn't visible from the outside. An early assessment establishes a baseline and identifies anything worth monitoring.

How do I know if my child needs chiropractic care?+

Common things parents notice include a consistent head tilt or preference for looking one direction, difficulty settling or sleeping, changes in feeding or comfort during feeding, and postural asymmetries. That said, you don't need a specific concern — a general check-up is always appropriate.

Will my child be afraid?+

Most children are curious rather than anxious, especially when we take time to show them the scanner and explain what's happening. We work at your child's pace and involve them in the process — the scan results on the screen are often a highlight for older kids.

Is this covered by insurance?+

Chiropractic care for children is covered by most Alberta insurance plans that include chiropractic benefits. We offer direct billing to most major providers. Contact us before your appointment to confirm your family's coverage.
