What Is Neurological Scanning
Precise care starts with measuring, not guessing
Your spine protects your spinal cord — the main highway of your nervous system. When vertebrae are misaligned, they create interference on that highway. That interference doesn't always feel like back pain. It can show up as fatigue, tension headaches, poor sleep, a weakened immune system, or a general feeling that your body just isn't functioning as well as it should.
The problem with most chiropractic care is that it's based on what a practitioner can feel with their hands. That's useful — but it's imprecise. It's the difference between estimating a distance and measuring it.
INSiGHT neurological scanning measures it. It gives us an objective, data-driven picture of your nervous system before we treat anything — so your care plan is built on evidence, not estimation. The scan is completely non-invasive, no radiation, no discomfort, and takes around 10 minutes.
In Plain English
Before we adjust a single vertebra, we measure accumulated neurological stress in your autonomic and neuromuscular systems — and use your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) to understand how adaptable your body is and how much capacity for healing you actually have.
What the INSiGHT Scan Measures
Three windows into your nervous system
The INSiGHT scanner captures three distinct measurements that together give us a complete picture of how your nervous system is functioning.
Measurement 01
Autonomic Nervous System Stress
Your autonomic nervous system controls everything you don't consciously think about — breathing, digestion, immune function, sleep regulation. The scan detects where this system is under chronic stress, which often produces symptoms that seem completely unrelated to your spine.
Measurement 02
Heart Rate Variability (HRV)
HRV measures the variation in time between your heartbeats — a reliable indicator of how well your nervous system is adapting to demands. High HRV means strong capacity to heal. Low HRV tells us your system is under load. This single reading shapes how we pace your entire care plan.
Measurement 03
Neuromuscular System
Surface EMG readings show which muscles are overworking to compensate for spinal stress — and which are underworking as a result. This explains patterns of tension, fatigue, and asymmetry and tells us exactly which areas of the spine need the most attention.

Your First Visit
What to expect when you come in
A neurological scan assessment takes around 60 minutes. Here's exactly how it works — no surprises.
We Listen First
Before any scanning begins, your chiropractor sits with you to understand what brought you in — your health history, your symptoms, your goals, and what you've already tried. This conversation shapes everything that follows.
The INSiGHT Scan
A handheld sensor moves along your spine — no needles, no radiation, no discomfort. It takes around 10 minutes and produces a colour-coded report. Green indicates a well-adapted nervous system. Yellow, amber, and red indicate increasing levels of accumulated stress. Most people are surprised by what shows up.
We Review Your Results Together
Your chiropractor walks you through your scan results in plain language — what each reading means and how it connects to what you described in your health history. You'll understand your own body in a way you probably never have before.
A Care Plan Built Around Your Scan
If care is recommended, your treatment plan is built directly from your scan results. Your HRV tells us how intensively to work and at what pace. Every adjustment is informed by objective data. And when we re-scan you after a course of care, you can see the change in the numbers — not just feel it.
Who Benefits from a Scan
You don't have to be in pain to benefit
The INSiGHT scan is valuable for almost anyone — but these are the patients who tend to find it most revealing.
Children & Infants
Kids can't always articulate discomfort. The scan gives us objective information about their nervous system that a physical exam alone can't provide.
Pregnant & Postpartum Moms
Pregnancy places significant demands on the spine and nervous system. A scan helps us understand the full picture — not just where it hurts.
Active Adults & Athletes
High-performing bodies compensate efficiently — which means problems hide well. Neurological scanning reveals underlying stress patterns before performance suffers.
After a Motor Vehicle Accident
ER visits check for fractures — not spinal nerve stress. A post-accident scan is one of the most valuable assessments you can have.
Desk Workers & Screen Users
Chronic sedentary posture creates nerve stress that builds slowly and silently. A scan typically reveals far more accumulated tension than people expect.
Anyone Who Wants to Know
You don't need a symptom to justify a scan. Many patients come in simply because they want an objective picture of their nervous system.
Common Questions
What people ask before they book
Is the scan painful or uncomfortable?+
Not at all. The INSiGHT scanner uses a small handheld sensor that moves along the surface of your skin beside your spine. There's no pressure, no needles, and no radiation. Most patients say it feels like nothing at all — and the most common reaction is surprise at how quick and painless it is.
How is this different from an X-ray or MRI?+
X-rays and MRIs show structure — bones, discs, and soft tissue. The INSiGHT scan shows function — how your nervous system is actually performing. A spine can look completely normal on an X-ray while still having significant nerve stress.
Can children and babies be scanned?+
Yes — we can scan patients of any age, including infants. For children, the scan is particularly valuable because kids often can't accurately describe where or how they feel discomfort. It's completely non-invasive and safe.
Is the scan covered by insurance?+
The INSiGHT scan is included as part of your new patient assessment at Elevate Life. We offer direct billing to most major Alberta insurance providers. Contact us before your appointment and we'll help you confirm your coverage.
What does HRV actually tell you?+
Heart Rate Variability measures the variation in time between your heartbeats. A healthy nervous system produces higher variability — it responds flexibly to changing demands. A stressed nervous system produces lower variability — it's rigid. For us, HRV tells us how much capacity your body has for change right now, and shapes how we pace your care plan.
Will I be re-scanned over time?+
Yes — we re-scan patients at regular intervals so you can see the change in your nervous system over time. Instead of just trusting that the adjustments are working, you can see it in the data. Watching green replace red on your scan report is one of the most satisfying things we get to show patients.
